There is a lot you can do with studio lighting and many ways to use lights, one of the more dramatic use of lights which is a little fun is using two flash guns to dynamic contrasting and somewhat directional lighting.

In this shot we see a single flash gun on this child portrait.

But thats what you can do with a flash gun and there are some more far better examples of the use of flash guns especially with fashion photography. But this post is about studio lighting and I wanted you to think outside of the box before you get fixed on studio lighting.

these videos I found from a comment made on one of our websites and blogs and want ed to realy show these as they do offer the basics of simple lighting.

ONE LIGHT

This is the follow up video that gives you the ONE TWO and THREE lights.

One of the things that I do spot most of the time is no hair lighting with it is needed and this has a BIG effect on the way that the pictures looks and hte model asn they pull them away from the backgrounds and to add some Drama and Contrast.

Of course as a creative person, Lighting and aspects of your lighting will effect the way the image is portrayed and using different lighting for different styles of photography is important as well.

This photo is a reverced lighting application, the more higher power light is 45 /45 to the rear and the gun is balnaced for even lighting on the front of the subject about 20 degrees off centre and just slightly under the level with the eyes for those catch lights and of course to remove the shadowing under the nose.
When It comes to models with Dark hair you tend to have to go up a few stops over those with light hair where you would have to come down a few stops, but with curls, and you can see you need to take a medium basis for the light as often the thiner areas of hair will burn out as the light shines through the hair itself.

Either way the best way to learn is with geting out there and playing with the lights and really working the difference in the power and position of the lights to add or remove shadows.
If you want to try something simple with your flash gun, take a sunjects photos with the flash pointing directly up and then turn your camer upside down and see the change in the contrast and lighting and how it falls across the face and where the shadows fall.

Photography as a business

Today and for many years a lot of people have looked at moving into photography as a business or as a second income which has come about because of a photography hobby and interest.

Within our photography as a business workshops, we look at photography as a business more as an individual basis, this is due to the vast areas of photography that one may wish to move into.

Business- underling importance

Company formation

Business presentation and targeting

Marketing your business

Requirements

Funding

Business plan

Being able to use a camera is one thing, running a photography business is another.

Many photographers fall into a legal nightmare within the first few months of opening their photography business. One clear problem is dealing with contracts and the legal issues that you may come across.

The other important parts of running a photography business is marketing your skills and business in the correct manor for the intended market, some things work and something’s don’t; it better to be ahead than to fail trying.

photography business

Many new photographers move into business with the wrong ideas, this can be fed from a interest in the subject and then maybe a friend asking for them to shoot a few pictures. The photographer then puts an advertisement or website together with out thinking of the legal problems they have caused themselves; in fact there are many website’s that make the photographers liable or offer more than they intend to.

Photography business basics

Selecting the right business model to work from is essential as you can lose your home and all your assets if you get it wrong. During the workshop, we look at the various options available and how to safe guard yourself against common problems that most photographers come up against.

As the needs and aspirations of photographers differ greatly, our business workshops are a one to one service, this ensures that the advice given is targeted directly at your needs and ongoing requirements.
Set over a few weeks, we first look at your business idea and then look at your target market to carry out a feasibility study. This is to understand you and your business as a basic foundation of our advice and test to see your requirements for basic business planning.

We then look at your skills, and business model and make suggestions giving you feedback. we then offer advice and help you with your next step.

The follow step will be your presentation and marketing, this may be advertising or online website, where we can help you with this to ensure you are aware of the requirements that you need to have and make.

We look at your contracts and provide sample contracts for you to use. Following this we provide some support for you after you start your business if you happen to become stuck.

We do cover other areas that we have not mentioned in this run down of our photography business workshop, such as funding grants, VAT and taxes, company formation, etc etc. for more information click here to view the GTWCMT business services website.

With a lot of photographers they seem to fall into this comfort zone and style that is them through and through. If you look at 1980′s photographer’s you can see that not much has changed in there photographic abilities and fashion changes are missed.

Being stuck in this rutt can often lead to photographers missing out on jobs just because people think that their work is out dated and you can see the difference between newer photographers and older photographers as well as the changes in advertising and what actually sells.

This course is a combination of theory and practical work to get your photography to think out side of the box.

The aim of the course is to bring you back to basics, using the rule of thirds and breaking those rules to give you more outstanding results.

Take a new and fresh look at subjects by going far from your comfort zone and tackling new assignments and having your work critiqued as well as hands on work with one of our photographers.

The photography training is firstly an assessment of your work and critique of your work, you can then resubmit your work based on the critique that was given.
We will ask you to complete a task to see how out side the box and comfort zone you can go and then the remainder of the photography training course is hands on real photography with a professional photographer.

Our courses are meant to challenge you, but they are relaxed and informal so that you enjoy being told your photography stinks.. only joking.. but its a laid back more casual form of training rather than being at school, and is also a more one to one from of training.

The aim of the course:

Look differently at approaches to taking a image

take a image differently

retrain your way of thinking and habit

show you a different way of working

Give you tips and advice on altering images

Hands on work as well as assignments to gain an understanding of how you shoot and how to improve.

This photography training course is targeted at photographers that are already established and wish to redevelop their photography skills. This is NOT a film to digital Photography course (see basic photography training for learning digital photography).

Course Structure

The course is a mixture of media and information. We will send you over some information, which is general reading material, which should point you in the right direction as a start.
The next step is about buying a camera if you don’t already have one, how they work what they do and what the different modes do etc..and what a camera cant do. so this is the technical part.
Your next part is a technical assessment of your photo’s, this will show where your going right and wrong, this is call a critique. You then take what we say and try again.
There is then some videos to watch and learn from. This will give you an insight to professional photography and image taking.

Buying a digital camera and what mega pixels mean

Workflow for digital cameras and basic image editing.

This photography training course is targeted at photographers who are moving from film camera to digital cameras. There is a difference between the two types of cameras and the menus can seen that bit to much with about 20 settings to do one thing and combinations. Digital photography is pretty simple once you grasp the basis of how the camera works apposed to film and understanding its limits and differences.

Course Structure

The course is more hands on than our basic photography training course in that we will provide you with information on the cameras, the technical limits and how to do the things that you do with your film camera on a digital camera.

We will go through a shoot (random) and walk you though so that you can see the differences and ask the questions as you need to. In basic form this photography course and digital photography training is a bit like having a friend that knows about digital and film cameras that you can ask all the questions that you want and we will show you.

we have digital SLR cameras that you can use if you haven’t bought your own digital camera yet and are holding back on taking the step toward digital photography.
